Research into how art/craft/design is displayed and exhibited

When creating art work such as paintings, animation and sculptures its important to research promotional work and methods of promotion. This helps you promote your art work and also keep an eye on the competition. There are many ways to display Art craft or design work such as:
• Commercially: shops/shopping centres, galleries, Internet or magazines
• Public spaces: exhibitions, museums, colleges, galleries
• Community spaces: bus stations, roundabouts, town centres

Commercial promotion is key in today's community. More and more consumers are demanding more from the commercial world around them, it is key that companies and industries are using art, craft and design as a means of promotion. This presents opportunities for both industries and artists. This can be in a supermarket or other retail stores that will use the art as a decorative piece to attract customers or in a gallery that charges admission for members of the community to come in and view the art. This helps the popularity of artists and the venue. This is also the case for showcasing art in public or community spaces, this can also bring in money for the artists. There are lots of places and chances for artists to present their work in these places, chances that i should look in to when trying to promote my own work. I could easily approach local store or business owners and propose that i use some of my work to promote them at the same time as promoting myself. One way of me promoting my work would be to display it round school or in the sixth form common room.

One method for artistic promotion in public spaces that i really like is graffiti style art murals. These murals bring dull and ordinary spaces to life, creating a more attractive environment. These forms of promotion art also almost always created on a large scale, big enough to catch the eye of passers by, even those far away, this means that the audience for promoting yourself too is widely increased. One artist that works in this fashion is Banksy, Banksy uses graffiti in public spaces to promote himself, which then promotes the online store that he has to sell his art pieces and prints. Having an online store is also a great way of promoting yourself. Online stores and porfolios go well with art in public spaces. This is also a good way of promoting work that I would consider. But finding a public place available and be difficult.

This is a screen shot of an online portfolio. This is an awesome was to get your name out there and your art seen by many people.

These are photographs of some of the pages from my promotional portfolio of work. This folder shows; research in to existing artists' work, my own hand drawn work, finished and photo-shopped work. Also there are screen shots of production and editing. The layout is simple and makes it easy for the client to view and assess.

Research into existing artists and methods of promotion.

Its not all about looking at methods of promotion for artists, but it’s important to look at how successful artists promote themselves, their work and how they sell and manage their work.

One artist who is very familiar with British street art/graffiti and who makes sure his work is exhibited on a large scale is Edgar Muller’s "satirical street art subversive epigrams that have big abstract and natural. Spread across large blank walls, car parks, streets or any black available space. He makes his work so public to both promote himself and to anger the government for labelling his work as vandalism. He does not use this popularity to his advantage though, as he does not sell his work, he simply promotes himself. His work has still been known to be sold for a very high price by owners of the buildings and walls he has worked on.

Another artist who has created a form of self promotion that has caught my eye is Mehmet Ali Uysal with his giant clothes peg at Chaudfontaine Park. The peg is 20 feet tall and works to promote Mehmet and his other work such as his suspention collection and other pieces that are displayed in galleries. Creating something bold and unique is a method of self promotion that i will look in to do, the promotional work displayed does not necessarily have to be too similar to the work you are trying to promote. This is a good thing if you are trying to promote work that may be difficult to create on a larger scale.
